Momentous Day

Yesterday was a pretty cool day for a few reasons. The first reason is because of the inauguration of Barack Obama. (that's a pretty cool name, my kids love to say it). I didn't vote for him, but I am pretty excited that he won, as I think most of the country is too. It is amazing to me to see how smoothly the transition takes place from a republican president to a democratic president. I can think of several countries where if another president with such different views as the past president took office there would be civil unrest in the country. I am glad to live in America.
I didn't have the chance to watch the inauguration in person but I saw most of it later on the news. I was inspired by his speech. I truly think that he has the desire to change this country so that government will actually help the people. One of my favorite quotes is this "The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified." I agree with this. I think that this is exactly what we need: a functioning government, instead of the bureaucracy and red tape that our government usually consists of. It will be interesting to see what he accomplishes and how he will accomplish it. I am also interested in seeing how Congress will work or not work with the vision of this country that he has expressed.
It's also neat to see how enthralled my boys are with the whole political process and the transition that has taken place. I think they are intrigued by the fact that President Obama has two daughters that are roughly the same age as they are. Every time they see them on tv they say there is Sasha and Malia. They both had the opportunity to watch the inauguration at school yesterday. I think that they will probably remember that for the rest of their lives.
