Last week we took an early summer road trip to the Grand Canyon. We left right after the boys' last day of school on Tuesday and headed to my mom's house in Colorado Springs. She bravely decided she wanted to come with us, since she had never been to the Grand Canyon. Wednesday morning we woke up around five and headed out of town around 6:30. We arrived LATE that night around 11:00 (Arizona time) and set up our tents in the dark. Luckily none of our neighbors complained about the passel of kids invading the campsite kind of trying to be quiet. The next morning we woke up and made a hearty breakfast of pancakes and sausage on the camp stove (You have to haul in your own firewood or buy it at the HUGE "general store" at the park, which we ended up doing later on that night). Then after wrangling all the kids into a decent condition to go out and putting all our supplies into a backpack for the day we ventured out into the park. The Grand Canyon National Park has a shuttle that takes you to all the lookout points along the southern rim of the canyon so all we did was catch the shuttle from the campground and basically rode it all day. We even went out past the normal points and connected to the shuttle to see the less popular points to the west, which was probably my favorite part of the Grand Canyon.
To say that the views were awe-inspiring would be an understatement. It really was, in Abe's words, " amazing what water can do". Which is not entirely accurate but close enough! That night we cooked brats over the campfire and carrots and potatoes in foil packets followed, of course, by the ever-popular s'mores. It was really good eatin' !!! It also began to rain off and on during dinner. The weather all that day was cloudy and at times it sprinkled but not a strong steady downpour. That came during the night. It rained ALL night. Our tent stayed pretty dry, but the tent my mom and Abe slept in leaked until finally around 6:30 my mom woke us up and wanted to join us in our tent. I don't blame you mom!!!! We were already planning on heading out that morning so we just went ahead and packed up our very muddy selves and left. We drove through the Navajo reservation on a very scenic road up through the four corners to Cortez, Colorado where we had a hotel room reserved. We showered (hallelujah!!!) and went out to eat at a kickin' pizza place called "Thatza Pizza/Lotsa Pasta" where we ordered a pizza that tasted a lot like my favorite pasta dish, spaghetti carbonara (I wrote down the toppings so I could attempt to recreate it!!). Then we headed back to the hotel and crashed around 8 (which is probably an all-time earliest bedtime for me! The next morning...
To be continued...
You like the "cliff-hanger"? Get it cliff-hanger, Grand Canyon? Nevermind
