Last night we picked one of our watermelons to eat it. We were so excited! But, alas, when we opened it we discovered we should have waited a little longer! How dissapointing! We have two more so we will wait a few more weeks before opening them. If anyone has any tips on surefire ways to tell whether or not a watermelon is ready to be picked please let me know!

We had the same problem when we grew our own watermelons. I hear that if you knock on it and it sounds hollow that it's good and ready. Dang...and that was a HUGE one! The looks of anticipation and then disappointment on their faces tell it all....
Yep, knock on it. You want to hear a real hollow sound. Plus, it needs to have a sunspot on the bottom of it where it's been resting on the ground.
