Today was the first official day of winter break for my kids. And all I can say is "how much longer?" It didn't start off too bad. Lucy and the boys woke up and ate breakfast and I took a shower and got dressed. Then I finished making the sugar cookies that I started last night. Lucy helped me a bit but the boys weren't really interested. Then they played a bit and watched a bit of tv. I fed them a lunch of PB and J sandwiches before I let them loose on decorating the Christmas cookies. Although they weren't really interested in doing that. They did, however, decorate a couple and then thoroughly enjoyed eating them. Yesterday we got a message from one of the parents of a kid in Abe's class inviting him over this afternoon to work on a project for OM (odyssey of the mind, an afterschool group). The parent said she was the coach for OM and he's been to their house once before and this boy has been to our house too, so I thought "Abe would really enjoy that". This afternoon Kaleb dropped him off at the friends house. When I went to pick him up three hours later, I didn't see any parents so I figure maybe they're in another room or something. I asked Abe when we got in the car if the boy's parents were there and he said, "no, his mom had to work. but his older sisters were there". I was like "oookay" but then I started thinking about it and I began to get a little upset. What if something had happened to one of the kids? On the message she left it made it sound like she was going to be there. After I started stewing over this, I talked with Abe about how he never should be at a friends house without a parent there. I obviously should have done this before. Granted, this could have been avoided had we done a little more investigating beforehand, but still... who would let a bunch of kids come over without adult supervision??
Then I did a another dumb thing: I took all four of my kids to Wal-mart for a little shopping. It was PACKED!!!! The kids were actually not that bad. Surprisingly today, Abe and Lucy were the grumpy ones. They both seemed to be really tired, especially Lucy. She didn't take a nap today and I've discovered that she still definitely needs one. On top of all this I did about seven loads of laundry. Hopefully tomorrow will go better and we'll all get out of the house a little more. I don't know how people who homeschool do it?!!!
